Installation Notes:

If you haven’t installed Exchange Server yet, you can use the info at Quicker Exchange installs complete with service packs and rollups to save you some time.

Microsoft Update can’t detect rollups for Exchange 2010 servers that are members of a Database Availability Group (DAG). See the post Installing Exchange 2010 Rollups on DAG Servers for info, and a script, for installing update rollups.

Update Rollups should be applied to Internet facing Client Access Servers before being installed on non-Internet facing Client Access Servers.

If you’re installing the update rollup on Exchange servers that don’t have Internet access, see “Installing Exchange 2007 & 2010 rollups on servers that don’t have Internet access” for some additional steps.

Note to Forefront users:

If you don’t disable Forefront before installing a rollup or service pack, and enable afterwards, you run the risk of Exchange related services not starting. You can disable Forefront by going to a command prompt and navigating to the Forefront directory and running FSCUtility /disable. To enable Forefront after installation of a UR or SP, run FSCUtility /enable.

Exporting and Importing Exchange Auto Attendant Prompts

May 9th, 2013 No comments

While cloning a customer’s environment in prep for a cross-forest move to a resource forest, I needed to duplicate the auto attendant configuration. This included a slew of custom auto attendant prompts. I looked all around the current servers to see if the original .wav files were anywhere, and only managed to find a few. So I resorted to Export-UMPrompt to just export all of the prompts to .wav files. The plan was to then take those .wav files and import them on the new servers in the resource forest.

For each prompt, I used something like this:

$prompt = Export-UMPrompt -UMAutoAttendant "Qatar Service Desk" -PromptFileName "Qatar_NormalBusinessHours.wav"
Set-Content -Path "c:\umprompts\Qatar Service Desk\Qatar_NormalBusinessHours.wav" -Value $prompt.AudioData -Encoding Byte

This yielded me a .wav file that I was able to open with Windows Media Player and verify the contents. So far, so good.

However, when I went to import this on the new server using Import-UMPrompt, using something like:

[byte[]]$c = Get-content -Path "c:\UMPrompts\Qatar Service Desk\Qatar_NormalBusinessHours.wav" -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0
Import-UMPrompt -UMDialPlan "Contoso Qatar Dial Plan" -PromptFileName "Qatar_NormalBusinessHours.wav" -PromptFileData $c

I was presented with this:

The file is not in the correct .wav format for custom greetings.

The file is not in the correct .wav format for custom greetings.

As Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory may say “oh – what fresh hell is this?”. You’d think that if you export a prompt, it would give you a file that is supported for import, right? Not so fast. Seems that the exported files are 16Khz, but, as the error above states, we need 8Khz. And ONLY 8Khz. And the Export-UMPrompt doesn’t provide a parameter to specify the exported file properties (wouldn’t that be nice?).

So we turn to some quick shareware software called GoldWave.

Once installed, open GoldWave, and then click the Open button, and open your .wav file.

GoldWave

File opened in GoldWave

Then click the little “Hz” button on the toolbar, and set the sample rate at 8000, as shown below:

Setting the resample rate to 8000

Setting the resample rate to 8000 (click for larger view)

You will notice that at the very bottom of the GoldWave window, it now says something like “Wave PCM signed 16 bit, 8000 Hz, 128 kps, mono”. Click File>Save As.

Choose “Wave (*wav)” as the Save As Type, and set the Attributes to “PCM signed 16 bit, mono”.

Saving file as 16bit mono

Saving file as 16bit mono

After I did this for each of the files, they imported fine.

Microsoft Re-releases Several Exchange Update Rollups Due to Code Signing Issue

October 11th, 2012 No comments

Microsoft has discovered that digital certificates used to sign some files in recent Update Rollups for Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Server 2007 will expire prematurely, some as soon as the next couple of months. This was documented in a recent Security Advisory. As a result, Microsoft has released corrected versions of Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 SP2, Update Rollup 7 for Exchange Server 2010 SP1, and Update Rollup 8 for Exchange Server 2007 SP3. For the most part, nothing from a code or functionality/feature set changes, with the exception of Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 SP2. That rollup includes a fix for  a problem with Outlook 2010 and 2013 where only one result is returned when clicking “view all results”. That fix, from KB 2756987, is now included. All of these Update Rollups, dubbed the “V2” of each, are now available for download at the links below.

When installing these Update Rollups, it is not required to uninstall the original version.

Microsoft has noted in another Advisory from Security Research and Defense that this isn’t an Exchange issue, and is reissuing other recent releases as well. This includes some security patches. I suggest you read that advisory to see how it may impact other systems in your environment.

Microsoft has also released a WinVerifyTrust package to verify that the issue is resolved. Download the appropriate version if you’d like to ensure you’re safe.

It’s also important to know that some third-party applications and solutions may display unexpected results if they query these incorrect time stamps. As a result it’s recommended that you install the v2 versions even if you already have the original v1 version installed. Microsoft states: “We encourage all customers to apply the re-released, re-signed security updates as they become available. As an additional defense-in-depth measure, we recommend that customers also apply the updated WinVerifyTrust package which serves as an effective way for Windows and Microsoft applications to extend the validity period of these packages beyond the premature expiration date. We should be clear that the re-released, re-signed security updates by themselves are sufficient to address the potential compatibility issue and the WinVerifyTrust package is not strictly necessary – it is offered as a defense-in-depth option to customers who want to ensure that this issue does not affect them between now and the time they apply the updated security updates.”

This latest blunder doesn’t give Exchange IT professionals a warm fuzzy feeling. This is the latest in a string of bungled releases that have had to be released due to some problem. While I applaud Microsoft in identifying and correcting the issue without trying to hide it, I have to wonder if it’s safe to install any patches for fear they may further break an Exchange environment. A long-standing belief that many have is to not install RTM software – wait till the first service pack comes out. I’ve never held on to that, but Microsoft sure isn’t doing much in the public eye to help rid that believe. Let’s hope this is a lesson learned and this type of public humiliation for Microsoft doesn’t become any more of a pattern.

Update Rollup 7 (UR7) for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 released

August 15th, 2012 No comments

Microsoft has released the following update rollup for Exchange Server 2010:

  • Update Rollup 7 for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 (KB2743248)

If you’re running Exchange Server 2010 SP1, you need to apply Update Rollup 7 for Exchange 2010 SP1 to address the issues listed below.

Remember, you only need to download the latest update for the version of Exchange that you’re running.

Here is a list of the fixes included in Update Rollup 7:

  1. 2740358 MS12-058: Vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Server WebReady document viewing could allow remote code execution.

Download the rollup here.
